Very beautiful proof engraved in a large format by R. Haasen after a work painted by Jules Adler. The lively Boulevard des Batignolles in Winter is represented from a high angle, as if the artist were on the balcony of a building overlooking the boulevard. We find the same atmosphere as in his painting “Les communiantes”. A group of characters occupies the center of the painting while a person or a couple are represented offset on the right or left of the scene. This construction creates a real dynamic in the whole painting.
We can imagine that the character seen in profile, heading towards the crowd, is a self-portrait of the painter.
Etchings by the engraver are kept at the Bibliothèque nationale Richelieu.
